United States Women Qualify for Water Polo Super Finals

EAST MEADOW, N.Y., USA, July 11. BEHIND a 9-1 victory over Brazil on Sunday, the United States women qualified for the FINA World League Water Polo Super Finals, scheduled for August 18-21 in Kirishi, Russia. First, the United States will make a run this month at a world championship in Montreal. The U.S. took bronze at last summer’s Olympic Games in Athens.

The United States qualified for the Super Finals out of Group A, which also included qualifications from Canada, Australia and Greece. The qualifiers from Group B are Hungary, Russia, Italy and the Netherlands. Italy is the reigning Olympic champ and Greece took silver.

Although the United States men will compete at the World Championships, the squad failed to qualify for the Super League Finals. Dropping an 11-3 decision to Hungary, ranked first in the world, the U.S. could not advance out of the qualifying tournament.
