UNC Tar Heels Land Verbal From Sprinter Gavin Mayo

NEW COMMIT: The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill has earned a verbal commitment from Gavin Mayo, who will suit up for the Tar Heels beginning in the fall of 2019.

A native of Greensburg, Penn., Mayo currently swims for Hempfield Aqua Club and has achieved a Winter Juniors cut in the 50 free. He most recently competed at the TPIT Junior Olympics in July where he finaled in three events. He also raced at the Allegheny Mountain Senior Championships and recorded a lifetime best in the 100 back.

Mayo also represents Hempfield High School and is a two-time Pennsylvania 3A State Championship qualifier. The NISCA All-American placed fourth in the 50 free as a junior after posting a third-place finish and personal best in the same event at the WPIAL 3A Championships.

He told Swimming World:

“I am ecstatic to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of North Carolina next year. I chose UNC because of their incredible coaching staff and top notch swim program. The facilities are amazing and the academic opportunities offered are outstanding. I felt right at home on campus and I really loved the time I spent with the team. I am blessed to have supportive coaches, family, and friends who have pushed me and believed in me throughout my swimming career. Go Heels!”

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.73
  • 100 free – 46.80
  • 100 back – 52.11

When he arrives in Chapel Hill, Mayo will join a sprint group that includes Alvin Jiang, Greg Brocato and Jack Messenger. Under head coach Rich DeSelm, the Tar Heels finished eighth in the team standings at the 2018 ACC Championships.
