NEW COMMIT: Charlotte, North Carolina native Sophie Francis has announced her verbal commitment to swim for UC San Diego. She will move to the West Coast to join the Tritons in the fall of 2019.

Francis does her club swimming with SwimMAC Carolina where she is a Winter Junior National qualifier in the 100 free. She’s coming off a strong long course season, competing at the Futures Championships in Cary and the North Carolina Long Course Senior Championships. Former SwimMAC head coach and CEO David Marsh is entering his second year at the helm of UCSD’s program.

Also representing Charlotte Country Day School, Francis is a three-time NCISAA 3A state champion. As a sophomore in 2017, the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won both the 50 free (24.27) and 100 free (52.15) and repeated her title in the 50 (23.78) as a junior.

She told Swimming World:

“I chose UCSD because it gives me the perfect balance of an incredible swim program and the highest level of academics, not to mention that it is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Another thank you to my future coaches Marko Djordjevic and David Marsh for welcoming me to this incredible family. Can’t wait to join the class of 2023, and Go Tritons!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.78
  • 100 free – 50.86
  • 200 free – 1:51.06
  • 200 IM – 2:06.70
  • 400 IM – 4:26.33

Francis will make an immediate impact for the Tritons when she arrives on campus as part of the class of 2023. She would have scored in the A final of the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free at the 2018 PCSC Championships. Francis will have two years of overlap with Ciara Franke, the 2018 PCSC champion in the 200 free. UCSD is coming off a very successful 2017-18 campaign after winning their tenth-straight conference crown.
