NEW COMMIT: Three-time Junior National qualifier Greta Fanta of Encinitas, Calif. has announced her in-state verbal commitment to UCLA and will suit up for the Bruins in the fall of 2020.

A talented distance freestyler, Fanta does her club swimming with North Coast Aquatics and most recently placed 14th in the 800m free and 17th in the 1500m free at Junior Nationals this past summer. Last winter, she raced to seventh in the mile at Juniors West before going on to record three top-5 finishes at Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals.

Also competing for Cathedral Catholic High School, Fanta won the 500 free at the CIF San Diego Section 2 Championships during her sophomore season. She has made big improvements over the past two seasons, dropping four seconds in the 200 free, 13 in the 500 free, 25 in the 1000 free, and well over a minute in the mile.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so grateful to commit to UCLA!! It is the perfect combination of academics and athletics, and the team welcomed me with open arms! I couldn’t be happier to be a Bruin :))”

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:50.38
  • 500 free – 4:47.14
  • 1000 free – 9:50.03
  • 1650 free – 16:26.59

Fanta, whose best times already rank at the top of the Bruins’ roster, will add much-needed distance depth to UCLA’s lineup following the recent graduation of Sandra Soe. Fanta, who attended the 2018 National Select Camp, would’ve scored in the top-14 of the mile as well as the C-final of the 500 free at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships.
