NEW COMMIT: Butterflyer Katie Cho of Fullerton, Calif. has opted to stay in state for her college career and has handed her verbal commitment to UC San Diego.

She will join fellow in-state native Lexi DePaco of Danville, Calif. as a member of the Tritons’ class of 2025.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at UCSD! I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for supporting me throughout the years. Can’t wait to be a Triton!”

A talented butterflyer, Cho does her club swimming with La Mirada Armada and is a Junior National qualifier. She finished 24th in the 200 fly at Juniors West in December and had a strong showing at Indy Sectionals in 2019. Last summer, she raced to ninth place in the 200m fly at Santa Clarita Sectionals before going on to take 18th in that event at Mount Hood Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 55.41
  • 200 fly – 2:01.56
  • 500 free – 5:02.20

A rising senior at Sunny Hills High School, Cho raced the 100 fly at the CIF State Championships during her sophomore season. She is also a four-time CIF Southern DIII Section Championship finalist, finishing third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 500 free in 2019.

Even with just over a year of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Tritons at the start of the 2021-22 season, Cho will make an immediate impact. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 fly as well as the B-final of the 100 fly at the 2020 MPSF Championships where UCSD finished fifth overall in the team standings.
