U.S. Olympic Coaching Selections to be Announced Next Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, September 1. ONE week from today, the United States will announce the two individuals who will lead the American contingent at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The announcement will be made from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Mark Schubert, the United States' National Team Head Coach and General Manager, will make the announcement. The U.S. Olympic Team will be selected during competition from June 29-July 6 in Omaha, Neb. Assistant coaches will be selected based on the athletes who qualified for Beijing.

Among the leading contenders to be named to an Olympic post are Eddie Reese and Bob Bowman. Reese guided the United States men in Athens and is the longtime coach of the University of Texas and Longhorn Aquatics where he has molded the likes of Brendan Hansen, Aaron Peirsol, Ian Crocker and Neil Walker.

As for Bowman, he was the head man at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and developed Michael Phelps into an eight-time Olympic medalist. Now the coach of the University of Michigan and Club Wolverine, Bowman oversees the careers of Klete Keller, Peter Vanderkaay, Davis Tarwater and Kaitlin Sandeno.
