TYR Pro Swim Series Mission Viejo Day 2 Prelims: Abbey Weitzeil, Lilly King Sprint to Top Seeds

The 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series Mission Viejo stop continued with the Day 2 prelims.

The events for the day are the men’s and women’s 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle. Each event will have the women’s races followed by the men’s.

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 100 Free

The women’s 100 freestyle was loaded with some of the top names in the sport, and they did not disappoint during prelims.

A trio of two-time Olympians earned the top three seeds for finals with Abbey Weitzeil leading the pack at 53.71. Olivia Smoliga was second in 54.90 just ahead of Simone Manuel, who got to the wall in 54.91, setting up what looks to be a thrilling final as Weitzeil will be the one to chase.

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 100 Free

An extremely close men’s 100 free prelims followed the women’s race with three swimmers within four hundredths of a second of each other heading into finals.

Olympian Ryan Held took the top spot in 49.31, just ahead of NCAA champion Youssef Ramadan (49.34) and Jonathan Kulow (49.35).

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Olympian Lilly King looked in strong form in the 100 breaststroke and was more than a half second ahead of the field during prelims.

King finished in 1:07.85. NCAA champion Kaitlyn Dobler was next at 1:08.56, while Piper Enge took the third seed in 1:08.81.

Another close battle looks to be looming in the 100 breaststroke.

Jake Foster got to the wall in 1:01.34 during prelims to take the top seed in finals. Olympian Nic Fink is just behind at 1:01.68, followed by Brandon Fischer, who got to the wall at 1:01.80.

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 50 Backstroke

The women’s 50 backstroke could be one of the more intriguing finals.

Olympian Rhyan White took the top spot in 28.09, closely followed by Isabelle Stadden (28.33) and Olympian Claire Curzan (28.65).

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 50 Backstroke

Justin Ress sprinted to the wall first in the men’s 50 back. He touched in 25.19 to take the top seed in finals.

Olympian Hunter Armstrong was second at 25.36, followed by Spanish Olympian Hugo Gonzalez (25.54).

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 200 Butterfly

Texas was stellar in the 200 fly at the NCAA championships and proved it once again.

Recent seniors Kelly Pash and Dakota Luther took the top two seeds in Mission Viejo in the event. Pash got to the wall in 2:10.55, while Luther was just behind in 2:11.26.

Rachel Klinker took the third seed in 2:13.32.

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 200 Butterfly

Former Cal star Trenton Julian claimed the top seed in the men’s 200 fly, going a 1:57.60 to finish nearly a second ahead of the field.

Jack Dahlgren took the second seed din 1:58.87, followed by Yeziel Morales (2:00.30).

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 400 Free

After winning the 1500 free, Jillian Cox took the top seed in the 400 free on Thursday.

Cox got to the wall in 4:13.91, followed by Kayla Han (4:14.85) and Madi Mintenko (4:15.41).

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 400 Free

In the final event of the morning, Coby Carrozza took the top seed in the men’s 400 free. He touched the wall in 3:54.54.

Texas swimmer David Johnston was second in 3:56.18, followed by Marwan El Kamash (3:56.27).
