The 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series Mission Viejo stop kicked off on Wednesday with the men’s and women’s 1500-meter freestyle events.

The events were timed finals and had alternating men’s and women’s heats.

Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash led the entire men’s race and got to the wall in 15:15.19.

He was a full second ahead of runner-up David Johnston (15:16.19) from Texas Longhorn Aquatics. Alec Enyeart was third in 15:27.16, followed by Isaac Fleig (15:23.24), William Mulgrew (15:36.10), Dylan Porges Avila (15:47.26), Christian Bayo (15:52.65) and Guillarme Lord (15:53.19).

The winning time by El Kamash was 22 seconds off the Pro Swim Series record set by Jordan Wilimovsky in 2016 (14:53.12). The world record is 14:31.02 set by China’s Sun Yang in 2012 and American record is 14:26.70 set by Bobby Finke in 2022.

In the women’s race, Texas Longhorn Aquatics’ Jillian Cox slowly pulled away from the field to get to the wall first and earn the victory in the women’s 1500 freestyle.

Cox got to the wall in 16:31, really making a move in the final 500 to take the TYR Pro Swim Series title.

Kayla Han was second in 16:37.93, followed by Paige Downey (16:50.21), Abby Grottle (16:53.42), Caroline Riggs (16:54.80), Bailey Hartman (16:56.66), Danielle Gleason (16:56.85) and Rachel Love (17:06.32).

The World, U.S. Open, American and TYR Pro Swim Series record in the event is 15:20.48 set by Katie Ledecky in 2018.

The TYR Pro Swim Series will continue Thursday with a full slate of events with morning prelims and evening finals from Mission Viejo.
