Fritz Bedford continues to impress in the 50-54 age group in Masters swimming, lowering two short course yards national records last weekend at the New England championships at 51 years old.

Bedford, the older brother of 2000 Olympic champion B.J. Bedford, already owns the national record in the 50 backstroke with a 24.57 but was looking to take it lower. In the individual 50 backstroke race on Sunday, Bedford posted a 24.70 to fall a bit short of his record. But as the leadoff swimmer for the New England Masters in the men’s 200 medley relay later in the day, Bedford succeeded in his goal with a 24.49.

On Saturday, Bedford took down Clay Britt’s record of 53.09 that had stood since 2012 with a blazing 52.72 (25.14 split). That’s his fastest swim ever in Masters, dating back to his first Masters race in 2009.

Bedford nearly earned a third national record with a 23.59 in the 50 butterfly. It was a bit shy of Trip Hedrick’s 23.19 that has stood since 2004.
