NEW COMMIT: Garden City, N.Y. native Jake Newmark has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin and will join the Badgers in the fall of 2020.

A talented backstroker and freestyler, Newmark swims year-round with Long Island Express and owns five Summer Juniors standards. He finaled in the 50/100 back combo at NCSAs in March and won five events at the MIT Invitational in December. Last summer, he earned 100% best times at Metropolitan LCM Seniors before going on to win the 200m free at Eastern Zone Seniors.

A rising senior at Garden City High School, Newmark is a three-time New York Federation State Championships finalist. He won the 200 free and 500 free as a junior after placing 10th in the 100 back during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Wisconsin.  I’d like to thank Coach Suguiyama and all the other coaches at Wisconsin for this wonderful opportunity.  I’d also like to than my family, friends and coaches who have always supported me.  I’m so excited to be a Badger. #onwisconsin.”

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 23.75
  • 100 back – 49.77
  • 200 back – 1:48.66
  • 50 free – 20.91
  • 100 free – 45.25
  • 200 free – 1:38.15
  • 500 free – 4:27.10

Newmark is just on the edge of scoring range at the Big Ten Championships and will add valuable depth to Wisconsin’s back and free training group. He has continously made improvements each season and will arrive on campus as a member of the class of 2024 following the graduation of top returning backstroker/freestyler Cameron Tysoe.
