NEW COMMIT: Eagle River, Alaska native Ellie Mercer has announced her commitment to continue her academic and swimming career at Grand Canyon University beginning in the fall of 2020.

Primarily a backstroker, Mercer swims year-round with Chugiak Aquatic Club and earned bronze in the 200 back with a pair of additional top-8 finishes at Alaska Seniors last winter. She collected two golds at Alaska Junior Olympics in April after achieving a best time at Federal Way Sectionals. Also competing for Lathrop High School, Mercer won the 100 back and placed third in the 50 free during both her junior and senior seasons at the Alaska State Championships.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited for my commitment to swim for Grand Canyon University!! I’m so thankful for everyone that helped me along the way especially my coaches, this wouldn’t have been possible w/o them”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.65
  • 100 back – 56.71
  • 200 back – 2:03.88
  • 50 free – 24.84
  • 100 free – 53.86

When she suits up for the Lopes as a member of the class of 2024, Mercer will add valuable depth to their backstroke training group. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 back as well as the B-final of the 100 back at the 2019 WAC Championships where Grand Canyon finished seventh overall in the team standings.
