Truman State Women, Cal-Bakersfield Men Lead NCAA Div. II Team Races With One Day To Go

BUFFALO, March 12 — Well now, back to normalcy?

If the standings after Day 3's splashing was concluded this evening at Flickinger Aquatic Center in the NCAA Division II women's and men's swimming and diving championships are any indication, order has been restored in the pool: Three-time defending women's champ Truman State and Cal. State Bakersfield's men — winners of four of the last six titles — are ensconsed atop the leader board with only one day of competition left.

Truman State, which had trailed Drury and U Cal San Diego after the first two days,has a 459-423 point advantage over the Panthers with the Tritons (395) a strong third.

On the men's side Coach Bob Steele's CSUB Roadrunners, beep-beeping along for their record 13th overall championship and fifth under the former Southern Illinois head man, lead by a considerabe 550.5 – 421 margin over defending champ Drury. North Dakota's Fighting Sioux with 389 are third.

It ain't over 'til it's over and anything is possible, but for Bakersfield to fail to win a record 13th national title when the meet concludes Saturday evening here would require a major collapse –something for which Steele's teams are not noted.

The Truman-Drury battle is too close to call but TSU made up lots of points tonight and usually clinches the title on the last day. But Drury coach Brian Reynolds' Lady Panthers have swum well throughout the meet and will give the champs a battle down to the final relay.

* * * * *

There were several record-breaking swims this evening, starting with the men's 500 free by Bakersfield's Greg Mroz, who touched in 4:22.63. Mroz is a freshman from Poland carrying on in the tradition of former Polish freestylle stars Artur Wojdat, an All-America and NCAA champ for Iowa in the late '80s; and Arizona's Mariusz Podkoscielny, a multi-Pac 10 champ for the Wildcats during that same period and now women's coach at Miami. His time broke the old record of 4:24+ by CSUB's Vlasta Burda set a couple of years ago.

Mroz was chased throughout by Drury's 1000 free winner Henrik Weible, who went a pr and Panther-record 4:24.70 for seeond. His teammate, freshman Natalie Cardoza, another "import" but only from Southern California, splashed to her second gold when she won the women's 500 free. She had won the 100 on opening night.

The other record came in the men's 100 back where North Dakota's freshman Rodrigo Ferreira went 48.19 to break U Cal Davis' John Keppeler's 48.37 from a dozen years ago. He was pushed by Drury soph Alexis Perdomo, a Venezuelan (Ferreira's Brazilian) who went 48.90 in the finals but swam a Drury-record 48.62 in qualifying.

UCSD's junior breaststroke specialist Rosanna Delurgio, double-defending champ in both breaststroke events and 100 yard record-holder (1:01.88) won in 1:02.07. Two other finalists — teammate Denise Board (1:02.41) and Truman's Michala Osborn (school-record 1:02.69) were second and third. It marked the first time in Div. II history that three women were under 1:03.

The men's 100 breast title went to Drury's Jakub Jiracek (56.45) which will fit nicely in his trophy case along with golds he's already won in both individual medleys. A win in the 200 breastwould make him the only male four-event champ.

(Bakersfield's Lori Burton, last year's female Swimmer of the Championship, has won golds in the 50-200 frees and 100 fly thus far and will be going for a four-peat Saturday in the 100 free, a feat she accomplsihed last season.)

North Dakota's Fernando Alves won his second gold (200 fly) to go along with the 100 he won last night and Clarion diver Jamie Wolf also colleceted her second gold with a victory on the 3-meter board. She earlier had won the 1-meter. Alves' compatriot, Jenny Bachmeier, gave the Fighting Sioux their sole women's title so far with a 57.41 100 back No. 1.

Truman's only win came in the 800 free relay where it clocked 7:32.01 to North Dakota's 7:38.31. Bakersfield won the men's 800 relay by nearly six seconds over Drury, 7:34.57-6:40.43.

Presuming the Road Runners win their "lucky" 13th title, it will be the most for any men's swim team in any division save for perennial Div. III champ Kenyon, which has won 24 straight under veteran coach Jim Steen, and will be going for No. 25 next weekend at Principia College in St. Peters, Mo., where the Kenyon Ladies currently lead the women's championship.
