Towson Tigers Collect Verbal from Backstroker Reed Sells of Virginia Gators

NEW COMMIT: Boones Mill, Va. native Reed Sells has announced his verbal commitment to Towson University and will join Brian Benzing next fall.

Primarily a backstroker, Sells does his club swimming with Virginia Gators and most recently placed seventh in the 200m back and ninth in the 100m back/200m fly at TYR Summer Seniors. Last winter, he earned 100% best times at Virginia Seniors where his highest finish was a fifth-place showing in the 200 back. He also finished fifth in the 100m back as well as sixth in both the 50 back and 200 back at TYR Junior Nationals in March.

He told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim for Towson University! After meeting the team and being on campus, I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. A big thank you to the coaches at TU for this opportunity! Thank you to coaches Doug, Mike & JT for getting me to where I am today. A special thanks to my family for the tremendous love and support they have given me over the years. I cannot wait to be a Tiger next year! #GOTIGERS”

His best times include:

100 back – 50.69
200 back – 1:50.00
200 fly – 1:53.57

When he suits up for the Tigers at the start of the 2020-21 season, he’ll add much-needed backstroke depth following the graduation of some of their top seniors. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 back as well as the B-final of the 100 back at the 2019 CAA Championships where Towson finished fourth overall in the team standings.
