Torri Huske, Sophie Verzyl Win Swimmer and Diver of the Year from CSCAA

Torri Huske and Sophie Verzyl were named Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Year, respectively, by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America in Division I this season.

CSCAA released the selections on Tuesday after Saturday’s conclusion of the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, hosted by Georgia Tech. Virginia captures its sixth consecutive NCAA title, with Stanford in second place and Texas third in a narrow battle. Tuesday’s press release includes the 238 athletes earned that All-American honors, the full list of which is available here.

Virginia led the way with 58 selections. Stanford and Texas had 42 each.

Huske was outstanding at NCAAs. She won the NCAA title in the 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 100 free. The senior also helped the Cardinal finish second in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay and sixth in the 800 free relay.

Verzyl was named Diver of the Year after her first NCAA title on 3-meter springboard. The South Carolina senior won 3-meter and was second on 1-meter, within 0.25 points of winner Chiara Pellacani of Miami.

Virginia coach Todd DeSorbo was named CSCAA Swimming Coach of the Year for the sixth straight year. He led the Cavaliers to a sixth consecutive NCAA title, this one with unprecedented depth in the number of scorers after the graduation of mainstays like Alex Walsh and Gretchen Walsh. 

Minnesota’s Wenbo Chen was named Diving Coach of the Year. She mentored Elna Widerstrom to finishing third on 3-meter springboard and seventh on 1-meter. Viviana del Angel medaled on platform for the fourth straight year in fourth place, in addition to scoring as an honorable mention All-American on both springboards.
