NEW COMMIT: U.S. Open qualifier John Hayes of Elizabethtown, Ky. has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Alabama beginning in the fall of 2022.

He is the Crimson Tide’s first verbal for their Class of 2026.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my studies and swimming career at the University of Alabama. ROLL TIDE??”

A talented mid-distance freestyler, Hayes swims year-round with Cardinal Aquatics and owns the U.S. Open cut in the 200m free with three additional Junior National standards. He recorded three lifetime bests at Juniors East in December where he took 17th in the 200 free and 19th in the 500 free.

Last summer, he won the 200m free and was the runner-up in both the 50m and 100m free at the Kentucky LCM 13&O Championships. He then went on to place seventh in the 200m free, 10th in the 400m free, and 15th in the 100m free at NCSAs.

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 21.01
  • 100 free – 45.67
  • 200 free – 1:37.14
  • 500 free – 4:26.37

Currently a junior at Elizabethtown High School, Hayes is already a four-time Kentucky State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American earned gold in both the 200 free and 500 free as a sophomore while taking third and first, respectively, in those events during his freshman season.
