NEW COMMIT: Littleton, Colo. native Kathryn “Kate” Shanley has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Michigan as a member of the Wolverines’ class of 2025.

She will join Greta Gidley, Abbey Ketslakh, and Letitia Sim in Ann Arbor at the start of the 2021-22 season.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am extremely excited and humbled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming careers at the University of Michigan!!! I want to thank my coaches, teammates, friends and family for helping me strive to be the best I can be!!!! I can’t wait to be a Wolverine!!!”

A talented and rangy freestyler, Shanley does her club swimming with Foothills Swim Team and owns one U.S. Open cut with three additional Junior National standards. She earned bronze in the mile at Juniors West where she also finished 14th in both the 200 free and 500 free. Last summer, she won the 1500m free at Mount Hood Sectionals before going on to final in the 400m free at Junior Nationals.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.64
  • 100 free – 51.67
  • 200 free – 1:49.16
  • 500 free – 4:49.76
  • 1000 free – 10:05.54
  • 1650 free – 16:24.16

A current junior at Chatfield High School, Shanley is a six-time Colorado 5A State Championship finalist. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 200/500 free combo this past season while taking second in both of those events as a sophomore. She also finished second and first, respectively, in those events during her rookie campaign.

Shanley would’ve placed 11th in the 1650 free at the 2020 Big Ten Championships where Michigan finished second overall in the team standings.
