NEW COMMIT: Four-time U.S. Open qualifier Alex Sanchez of Plano, Texas, has pledged his in-state verbal commitment to the Aggies and will arrive in College Station as a member of the class of 2024.

Sanchez does his club swimming with Metroplex Aquatics and capped off his summer season with three best times at Junior Nationals. Last winter, he finished 20th in the 100 breast at Juniors West before going on to place eighth in the 200 breast at College Station Sectionals. Also competing for Plano Senior High School, Sanchez placed fifth in both the 100 fly and 100 breast as a junior at the UIL Texas 6A State Championships.

He told Swimming World:

“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to Texas A&M University. A&M is such an amazing place where the team and staff are all like family.  I am looking forward to continuing my academic and swimming career with the Aggies! Thank you to my friends and family and my coaches for all of the support they’ve given me. Gig’em!”

His best times include:

  • 100 breast – 56.00
  • 200 breast – 1:59.71
  • 100 fly – 49.08
  • 200 IM – 1:50.70

When he suits up for Texas A&M at the start of the 2020-21 season, Sanchez will add his talents to training groups that’ll include Tanner Olson, Jake Schababerle, and Alberto Gomez. He’s just shy of scoring range at the SEC Championships as it took a 54.08/1:58.15 to place in the 100/200 breast last season, but Sanchez has consistently made improvements each season.
