Teams Announced For Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournaments

The draws for the FINA Men & Women’s Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournaments 2016 were conducted on January 23, 2016 in Belgrade (SRB).

Men’s Tournament

GROUP A	GROUP B
A1 – RUS – Russia	B1 – ITA – Italy
A2 – SVK – Slovakia	B2 – RSA – South Africa
A3 – FRA – France	B3 – ESP – Spain
A4 – HUN – Hungary	B4 – NED – Netherlands
A5 – ROU – Romania	B5 – GER – Germany
A6 – CAN – Canada	B6 – KAZ – Kazakhstan

The qualifying tournament will be held in Trieste (ITA) on April 3-10, 2016

Women’s Tournament

GROUP A	GROUP B
A1 – JPN – Japan	B1 – FRA – France
A2 – ESP – Spain	B2 – ITA – Italy
A3 – RSA – South Africa	B3 – NZL – New Zealand
A4 – CAN – Canada	B4 – RUS – Russia
A5 – GRE – Greece	B5 – CUB – Cuba
A6 – USA – United States of America	B6 – NED – Netherlands

The qualifying tournament will be held in Gouda (NED) on March 21-28, 2016

So far, the following teams have qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games:

MEN
Brazil, USA, Japan, Montenegro, Australia, Serbia, Croatia, Greece

WOMEN
Brazil, China, Hungary, Australia

From the Qualification Tournaments, another four (4) teams will qualify to complete the 12 men’s and eight (8) women’s teams

In parallel, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee confirmed that both the men and women’s Water Polo Olympic Tournaments will entirely take place within the Barra Olympic Park, the main venue cluster. The preliminary matches will be played at the Maria Lenk Aquatics centre, while the knockout phases will be staged in the new Aquatics stadium.
