COVER:
Matt Vogel, 19, of the University of Tennessee, was the fastest 100 meter butterflyer in the world last year, winning the Olympic gold at Montreal with a time of 55.35. His time is the second fastest in the event of all time, just eight hundredths behind the world record holder, Mark Spitz. Vogel, only a sophomore, will be counted on by Vol Coach Ray Bussard when No. 4-ranked Tennessee travels to the NCAA's later this month. (Swimming World photo)

Here is an excerpt of the So, You Want To Be a Sports Photographer piece written by Tony Duffy:

One can't know too much about the competitors you're photographing. In a 100 meter race, you're unlikely to be able to get good action shots of more than one competitor, so you've got to pick the winner. Talking to coaches and swimmers in training can be very helpful especially if they are prepared to divulge their training times, but one has got to know what is a good or bad time for each event–if they think you're complete uninformed, they won't want to waste their time talking to you.

You also have to be aware of the characters of the individual swimmers–to know when to approach them and when to leave them alone. Some competitors welcome a quick chat before a race as it keeps their minds occupied; others are wrapped up in concentration and resent any intrusion.
