Swimming World Five Star Shannon Vreeland Pledges to College

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 10. THE commitment portion of the recruiting season is heating up. A day after three Swimming World five stars went off the market, another made her final choice. Shannon Vreeland completed her recruiting process by committing to a Southeastern Conference school.

Vreeland, who swims for the Kansas City Blazers and Blue Valley West High, is headed to Athens, Ga., to be part of the Georgia Bulldogs. Vreeland owns long course senior national cuts in plenty of events (100m free 0:55.94; 200m free 2:01.29; 200m back 2:14.82; 200m fly 2:16.81; 200m IM 2:17.95; 400m IM 4:50.34). She also beats the NCAA Division I B cuts in the 200-yard free (1:47.01), 500-yard free (4:47.41) and 400-yard IM (4:17.02).

"My decision really came down to a couple great schools and I feel like if I had gone anywhere I took a trip to, I would have been happy and done well," Vreeland told Swimming World. "The main difference was that UGA was the school I just felt like was a perfect fit. Friday of the trip I texted my parents and I was like, 'Ok, this is it. I just know it.' Athens is amazing, it was so gorgeous and I loved how much of a college town it was. The girls on the team are amazing, they're like a family, and I couldn't believe how close everyone was, the coaches are really personable and easy to talk to, and the program is outstanding for middle distance free/ IMers. I feel like being surrounded by the type of people on that team will only push and inspire me. Academics are also a big thing for me and the program has an amazing history of strong student-athletes. I can't wait for next year! GO BULLDOGS!!"
