Swimming Canada Inaugurates Canadian Age Group Championships

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada, July 19. MORE than 1,000 swimmers from across Canada are ready to hit the water and race against the top age group swimmers in the country.

The 2006 Canadian Age Group Championships run from July 20-23 at the Talisman Center in Calgary, Alberta. These championships are designed to give swimmers ages 12 through 18 the opportunity to race against the best athletes in their age group at national championships.

“The Age Group National Championship is new to our domestic competitive program,” CEO/National Coach of Swimming Canada Pierre Lafontaine said. “These young athletes are our future Olympians and we are really excited to move in this direction in order to make it more competitive and exciting for them as they progress.”

A provincial and national age group record breaking challenge has also been put forth to all athletes competing this weekend.

“Our goal in 2012 is to have every provincial and national record broken,” Lafontaine said. “This meet is an excellent opportunity for our swimmers to get in the water, swim fast and add their names to the record books!”

This year’s championship will feature 2006 Commonwealth Games athletes including double bronze medalist and national record holder Erica Morningstar (Calgary), and fourteen year old provincial record holder Marie Pier Couillard (Levis, QC). Canadian Age Group record holder Joel Greenshields (Calgary) will also be competing and ready to challenge his record and battle for numerous national titles.

Swimming action begins on Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23. Preliminary heats start at 9:30 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m. each day. Open water swimming takes place Monday, July 24 at Sylvan Lake.
