FINA World Swimming Championships

Gwangju 2019

Day Three Finals (Men’s 200 Free)

In a severe turn of events in the pool on Tuesday night at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, China’s Sun Yang won the 200 free final with a 1:44.93. Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys, who originally touched first at 1:44.69 was disqualified for a false start. The DQ became official immediately after the race for movement on the blocks.

The large contingent of fans from China on the lane 8 side of the pool screamed and shouted in delight when the official results were flashed on the scoreboard, with the rest of the pool jeering and booing the outcome.

Sun has been the talk of the venue in Gwangju this week after his controversial past with doping. The controversy came to a forefront when Australia’s Mack Horton lodged a silent protest in the medal ceremony of the 400 free on Sunday night, much to the delight of majority of the athletes competing.

Had Rapsys’ win counted, it would have been the first medal of his career at the World Championships. He would have moved up to eighth all-time.

This is Sun’s third straight medal in this event at the World Championships and he also defends his gold from 2017. He Joins Michael Phelps (2005, 2007), Ian Thorpe (2001, 2003) and Michael Gross (1982, 1986) as repeat winners at Worlds. He also joins Thorpe as winners of the 200 & 400 free in back-to-back World Championships.

“My victory was because of my hard work,” Sun said after the race. “I continued to keep fighting, I didn’t give up when I was in second place.”

“I was the only one to enter the 800 this morning, so I was very tired. I just slept for an hour and a half this afternoon.”

The silver medal went to Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto at 1:45.22. It was his first individual medal in his career and the first one for Japan at the World Championships. Russia’s Martin Malyutin and Great Britian’s Duncan Scott each picked up the bronze medal at 1:45.63. It is the first medal for either swimmer at the World Championships in an individual event.

“I guess I’ve sort of got to celebrate off someone else’s misfortune,” Scott said after the race. “I’d liked to have done it outright but it’s my first ever individual worlds medal so I have got to be happy with that and try and move things on in the rest of the week because I’ve still got more events to come.”

“To be perfectly honest I’ve definitely got more in there time wise. I have done a lot of 1:45s and I’ve swum them a lot of different ways as well. Learning but then I’m just disappointed I wasn’t able to go in there and get a best time. It’s two years now and I’ve not really moved it on timewise. It’s good that I am now consistent and I have been consistently dropping 1:45s at major meets which is good but it’s now trying to move that on as well.”

Early leader Clyde Lewis of Australia finished in sixth at 1:45.78. He was leading the race through 150 meters but fell off big time on the final lap. He had a meteoric rise last night in the semifinals, swimming a huge best of 1:44.90 to move him up to 10th all-time.

1 SUN Yang People's Republic of China CHN 1:44.93
2 MATSUMOTO Katsuhiro Japan JPN 1:45.22
3 MALYUTIN Martin Russian Federation RUS 1:45.63
3 SCOTT Duncan Great Britain GBR 1:45.63
5 MEGLI Filippo Italy ITA 1:45.67
6 LEWIS Clyde Australia AUS 1:45.78
7 KOZMA Dominik Hungary HUN 1:45.90
RAPSYS Danas Lithuania LTU DSQ

More controversy came about during the medal ceremony when Scott refused to take a photo with the medalists, shaking hands with Malyutin and Matsumoto, but refusing to make eye contact with Sun. Scott then took a photo with his medal alone but not with the other three medalists. He walked off after the ceremony was over and waved at the crowd. Sun eventually shouted at Scott, calling the Brit “a loser” and got in Scott’s face to make his feelings known.

Didn’t know dopers are considered athletes 😂 what a fucking joke

    • Sam Harris

Yanjing Wang I mean he actually came second, Rapsys wasn’t the first off the blocks. The way you treat a drug cheat like a hero is embarrassing to say the least

    • Connor Kioussis

Yanjing Wang You fellas are pretty good at doing what you can to win. Hope your boy Sun loses his testes from all the 💉

    • Antonia Beyer

Yes Sun is a king. A doping king.

    • Yanjing Wang

Hi guys yes of course I’M proud of him. But please check the new before you call him cheater. Is embarrassing when people don’t know the true and just keep spreading the rumor around. Doesn’t matter he came first or second or third I’m still proud of him.

    • Sam Harris

Yanjing Wang he served a BAN in 2014 because he tested positive to an illegal substance

    • Yanjing Wang

Sam Harris yes I will let you know y.
“To be sure, Sun was banned from competition in 2014, but it was for only three months and for a proscribed substance, trimetazidine, that had been prescribed for angina, a heart condition. When Sun took the drug, it had been on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list for less than five months, and today is no longer recognized as a stimulant by doping agencies.”
Please do some research before you judge people.

    • Connor Kioussis

Oi Yanjing if you read ASADA’s code it says it is “up to the athlete to undertake a risk assessment as to whether a drug contains a listed prohibited ingredient” Sun chose to take that drug and was sanctioned. We have every right to judge him

    • Matt Reinhardt

Connor kioussis taking drugs and smashing blood samples is ok, please do some research thanks

    • Sanele Nxumalo

you want him to get a lifetime ban so that they don’t have to deal with him? His case is pending in court and he got banned 3 months in 2014…he was smart to smash those samples coz they had no authorization testing him
And certainly no right to record him they could hv tempted with the results I would have done the same thing but till they find him guilty for this case?? All url doing is throwing around meaningless accusation Incase u haven’t noticed he’s swimming fast and not distracted

    • Yanjing Wang

Jack Thomas thx had snow in April last year which was pretty wired. Pretty flower with snow goes perfectly.

    • Yanjing Wang

Sanele Nxumalo Hi mate they know the truth but they just don’t want face the fact that Asian can swim as fast as Australia, English American people.

  5. Kaan Duru

Rapsys twitched at the start unfortunately. But he still wasn’t first off the blocks. He still went the fastest. Sorry Lithuania.

    • Oz Ozguc

Kaan Duru don’t you agree Sun is not even supposed to be racing under so much suspicion? I think the decision to let him race was a disaster..

    • Kaan Duru

His actions by themselves are a disgrace to new and young athletes. That by itself is worse than his alleged doping scandal.

Should be appealed .Saw the video and could not see any movement

    • Julien Debris

Brett Davies i support rapsys but i have to admit that i saw a movement (hips went up) .. it’s sad that this DQ gives the title to a drug cheater

  9. Shalvin Sharma

It was four years ago when he was caught doping. People are just salty because he is swimming fast. Just stop!!

    • Shalvin Sharma

Matt Reinhardt if he was he would be banned and stripped off his medals? A medicine he took that was recently banned was a mistake he wasant aware of.. the vile his security guard broke was deemed iilegal and was done without proper clearence that they had enquired about before they destroyed it.. nothing wrong on Sun Yangs side. FINA verdict is… The blood that was initially collected (and subsequently destroyed) was not collected with proper authorisation and thus was not properly a “sample” … as a result, the sample collection session initiated by IDTM on September, 4, 2018, is invalid and void.

No FINA DC rule violations can result there from.
So basically he is clean and clear. A champion is determined by his titles not by conspiracy or what bad loosers and their supporters claim!

        Spot on and well said.
Some individuals just don’t want to accept basic facts. They probably think they are smarter than the anti-doping professionals from FINA.

    • Matt Reinhardt

The druggo is still under investigation chief, stop living in denial 😂

    • Shalvin Sharma

There is no denial.. he is competing freely and is cleared by the world body to do so.. investigation for breaking the vile? It will go in his favour! Join the looser Horton and Keep crying as you might.. as it is the champion still rules!

James Hooper its was a medicine he took for chest pain not taken by injections or dosed like what Ryan Lochte was banned for.

    • Matt Reinhardt

Prescribed or not its every athletes responsibility to know if what THEY put in THEIR body is legal. And if you think him going smashy smashy on his blood samples is fine you need to grow up

      • avatar
        CowardHorton

you need to grow up bro. the fact is clear, the vile his security guard broke was deemed iilegal and was done without proper clearence that they had enquired about before they destroyed it.. and two of the three testers are unqualified and unauthorized, so nothing wrong on Sun Yangs side. FINA verdict is… The blood that was initially collected (and subsequently destroyed) was not collected with proper authorisation and thus was not properly a “sample” … as a result, the sample collection session initiated by IDTM on September, 4, 2018, is invalid and void.

        grow up, man!

    • Connor Kioussis

Shalvin Sharma every athlete is responsible for what they put in their body regardless of what they’re aware of, read the ASADA and WADA codes. How do you justify Sun smashing his own blood vials and continuously delaying tests for invalid reasons?? Sun is a weed in the sport not a champion

    • Shalvin Sharma

Like the world body i don’t believe in conspiracy or allegations. If he is tested and found guilty he can go f**k himself. For now he is the champion and i respect him as a sportsman. He has his side of the story. Besides they always test him with proper authorization and there never has been a problem with that apart from the time it being done improperly. The time he was banned he was prescribed to take that medication by a doctor, the substance it had in it was back than just recently banned. Innocent untill his proven guilty.. thats how it is for grown up’s

    • Yanjing Wang

      Shalvin Sharma well said

    • Ed Burton

He got banned by his own association, of course he is a cheat.

    • Ed Burton

      He has purple piss

    • Shalvin Sharma

He would still be banned if he was cheating by his own association. “Was” through a substance that got him 3 months since it wasn’t that serious and substance from the prescribed medication previously was allowed.

    • Yanjing Wang

      Ed Burton logic problem?

    • Taff Jones

      He’s a cheat! What about the first time… I suppose that w a s a mistake as well? He wasn’t cleared it’s still going on…. Disgusting 🤢

    • Shalvin Sharma

Taff Jones beginning in 2014, when he served a three-month suspension after testing positive for trimetazidine. Being a recently banned substance during that period, a substance that he had obtained for a therapeutic use and was merely prescribed the medication for chest pain by a doctor. Before the ban on the substance, it was legal for use in swimming not so long ago and its just for heart stimulation. In the second case, an independent panel heard arguments from both sides and then ruled in his favor. Sun’s refusal to provide a sample did not violate antidoping rules, it said, because the collectors failed to provide the proper validation papers required to draw blood under the International Standard for Testing and Investigations. Appeal for a harsher sentence is pending to be heard in September by WADA, this will be a second hearing for the same case. I do believe that athletes are treading a very treacherous path if they are making allegations against other individuals that they cannot substantiate. FINA events are no place “to make personal statements or gestures.”

Didn’t know dopers are considered athletes 😂 what a fucking joke

Using the f word doesn’t make your point more valid. It is not that difficult to understand that Sun did not violate any regulations and was cleared by FINA to compete in Korea, unless you are incapable of comprehending basic facts.

  11. Jaime Patten

Anyone point me in the direction of an online replay?

  12. Terence Reid

Wish to see you Sun fall off his throne. If you have nothing to hide why did you try to delay and avoid the drug tests

    • avatar
      rendezvous

Because the drug test was illegally taken and that’s why he smashed the blood sample. FINA doping panel’s report, dated January 3, decided Sun did not commit a doping violation, hence his clearance to South Korea. Of course, some people would just ignore the fact and keep on believing what they want to believe.

      • avatar

Frankly, what those “some people” believe in is their own supremacy.

“Australia’s Mack Horton lodged a silent protest in the medal ceremony of the 400 free on Sunday night, much to the delight of the rest of the athletes.”

Not true. “The rest of the athletes” don’t necessarily agree with Horton, not to say feeling delight about his behavior.

  19. avatar

Coruption and doping. Į hate moments like this.

  20. David Moyston

The problem here is a legal issue. The Chinese Federation not FINA are the ones who legally call the shots.

    • David Peterkin

David Moyston no wonder do they understand the word legal

    • David Moyston

David Peterkin yes as is the case between lawyers there is seldom agreement until the tribunal determines the outcome.

    • David Peterkin

David Moyston so he can cheat forever?????

    • David Moyston

David Peterkin no but CAS has to make the final determination.

If one appeals a decision of a Magistrate fining a driver for driving without due care and attention and suspends his licence the sentence doesn’t take effect until the appellate court makes the final determination.

    • David Peterkin

David Moyston looks like most of the swimmers don’t want him around

  21. LukenJean Vava

He was allowed by FINA to participate…cleared once and an appeal against his clearance is ongoing. This is bullying on a World Scale! Shame on you all!!!

    • Taff Jones

LukenJean Vava that’s because FINA are spineless.. He’s a cheat and his behaviour alone should have excluded him fro. Participating.

    • Swee Khiang

Taff Jones why? He is a double world champion in 2019 world championship now? That’s a fact. What are you disputing?

to people full of prejudice or cheated by fake news:
the fact is clear, the vile his security guard broke was deemed iilegal and was done without proper clearence that they had enquired about before they destroyed it.. and two of the three testers are unqualified and unauthorized, so nothing wrong on Sun Yangs side. FINA verdict is… The blood that was initially collected (and subsequently destroyed) was not collected with proper authorisation and thus was not properly a “sample” … as a result, the sample collection session initiated by IDTM on September, 4, 2018, is invalid and void.
So basically he is clean and clear.

Sun will have a public hearing in September. if he is tested posotive again, anyone, including Chinese , will not forgive him. if he’s not tested positive, all of you who’s calling him cheat now should apologize to him. but before the test result, you should just shut up and wait.

  26. Pedro Ferreira

We are all stars now in the Dope Show

  27. Charles Bertrand

Sun literally false started in the 1500 London 2012 and u tell me that a little movement on the block removes world title?? Shame on you Fina

  28. Sean McCully

    He shouldn’t even be there.

  29. Monica McDonald

If a tree falls in the forest…

  30. Ed Burton

I reckon he will be giving that medal back, maybe not now, maybe not next year, but at some point it will all unravel.

  31. Tim Conley

Come on everyone… suns doctor prescribed him a pain killer for “chest pain” that just so happens to enhance performance, increase muscle production, and shorten recovery time in training. Seems 100% legit. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️smh

    • Shalvin Sharma

Tim Conley its diffrent from steroids etc… what you’re trying to show is also done by protein supplements with maximum results. With trimetazidine enhancing performance, increasing muscle production and shortening recovery time can only be achieved to a minimal as its not a supplement but a medication and has a certain amount of dose that one can use. FYI The best known trimetazidine mechanism of action is its capacity to inhibit β-oxidation of free fatty acid (FFA) [1]. FFA oxidation provides more energy, but it is associated with increased oxygen consumption. When oxygen is in low supply, the oxidative processes of FFA and glucose are disrupted—paradoxically leading to an increased rate of FFA β-oxidation associated with even greater oxygen consumption—while glucose metabolism decreases, which results in lactate accumulation.

  32. Angie Lucas

Get rid of the drug cheat !
