NEW COMMIT: Mukilteo, Wash. native and current high school senior Elli Straume has verbally committed to Arizona State University and will join the Sun Devils as a member of the class of 2024.

Straume owns a pair of Winter Junior standards and does her club swimming with West Coast Aquatics. She most recently raced five events at Mount Hood Futures where she placed 19th in the 200m free after recording a trio of top-3 finishes at Pacific Northwest Seniors. Last winter, she raced to 20th in the 200 free at Juniors West before going on to win that event at Washington Seniors.

Also competing for Kamiakin High School, Straume is a six-time Washington 4A State Championship finalist and has earned NISCA All-American honors. She grabbed silver in the 200 free and bronze in the 500 free as a junior after placing second in the former event as well as fourth in the 100 free during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Arizona State University. As soon as I walked on campus I instantly felt at home. ASU was the perfect fit for me because of the amazing coaching staff, excellent academics, and great team atmosphere. I can’t wait to be apart of this program. Go Sun Devil’s! Fork ‘em!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.84
  • 100 free – 50.84
  • 200 free – 1:49.12
  • 500 free – 4:56.68
  • 100 back – 55.58
  • 200 IM – 2:06.95

Straume will add valuable depth to Arizona State’s mid-distance lineup when she suits up in the fall of 2020 and will join a training group that’ll be led by Emma Nordin and Erica Laning. She has continously made improvements over the past two seasons, dropping a second in the 50 free, two in the 100 free and six in the 200 free.
