PHOENIX, Arizona, September 27. THE World University Games wasn’t enough for the Australians. This week, they are staging their own national University Games, with some of the world’s top swimmers stepping up to race in the middle of what seems to be heavy training.
Christian Sprenger, the world record holder in the men’s 200 breast, won the 100 breast today in 1:03.4. Marieke Guehrer, the 2009 world champion in the 50 fly, won the 50 back in 29.05 and the 100 fly in 1:02.35.
Samantha Marshall, the silver medalist in the 100 breast at last year’s Commonwealth Games, won that event today in 1:09.84. Kyle Richardson, who is one of many freestylers contending for a spot on the Olympic 400 and 800 freestyle relays for Australia, won the 200 free in 1:51.90.
