Steve Riegler Joins Richmond’s Swimming Staff

RICHMOND, VA, November 5. STEVE Riegler, former assistant swimming and diving coach at Toledo, will join the Richmond Spiders swimming program as an assistant, head coach Matt Kredich announced last week.

Riegler served as assistant coach for almost two years at Toledo and coordinated all of the Rockets' recruiting beginning in May of 2002.

“Steve brings some great experience to our program," Kredich said. "He did excellent work at Toledo and Northern Illinois, and comes with some great recommendations. We are excited to welcome him to the Spider swimming family."

While at Toledo, Riegler's career was highlighted by helping his teams establish seven women's school records and one men’s school record. He also coached an NCAA "B" Cut qualifier in the 200 and 500 free. His success in recruiting at Toledo was evidenced by signing 10 prospects in 2003, then adding eight recruits to the Rocket's roster in 2004. His 2004 signings were considered by some as the best women's swimming recruiting class in school history.

Prior to his tenure in Toledo, Riegler was an assistant swimming and diving coach at Northern Illinois. While in DeKalb, Ill., he worked with an NCAA men's qualifier in the 200 free and coached the team to six men's school records, including two freestyle relay marks.

Riegler was a standout backstroker for the Rockets from 1994-98. Regarded as one of the most improved swimming athletes at Toledo, he was one of four Rocket swimmers to sweep the Top-4 places in the 200 back at the 1997 MAC Championships.

“Steve's enthusiasm has already given us a shot in the arm,” Kredich added. “We have some very high goals with this program, and Steve's vision meshes really well with our current staff. Our program instantly improves with this hire.”

After graduating with a bachelor's in Education from Toledo, Riegler served as an assistant swimming coach at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo, Ohio, while teaching physical education in the Washington Township School District. He then became a graduate assistant coach under former Toledo head swimming and diving coach Brian Sharar, while completing his master's degree in Recreation Administration.

Riegler is married to former Toledo swimmer Lori Boyle, and has one child, Meredith.
