Sprinter Sophia Friestedt Lends 2027 Verbal to Utah

NEW COMMIT: Sprint freestyler Sophia Friestedt of Glenview, Illinois, has verbally committed to the University of Utah and will arrive in Salt Lake City ahead of the 2027-28 season. Friestedt is a Junior National qualifier.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Utah! I’d like to thank my family for their endless love, support, and sacrifices. To my club and high school coaches, thank you for your guidance over the years. To all my teammates, thank you for constantly pushing me and being like a second family to me. Lastly, a huge thank you to Coaches Jonas, Aly, and Jordan, as well as the entire coaching staff at Utah, for this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to be part of this team! GO UTES!!!”

Friestedt does her club swimming with NASA Wildcat Aquatics and most recently competed at the NCSA Spring Championships where she earned four best times and finaled in the 50 free and 100 free. She competed at Juniors West in December and took 17th in the 50m free at Madison Futures last summer.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.31
  • 100 free – 50.79
  • 200 free – 1:53.56

Currently a junior at Loyola Academy, Friestedt placed ninth in the 50 free and 14th in the 100 free at the 2025 Illinois State Championships after taking second in both of those events at the sectional meet the week prior. She raced to 13th place in the 50 free at the state meet during her sophomore season.

Utah finished seventh at the 2026 Big 12 Championships.
