NEW COMMIT: Sprint freestyler Alyssa Schwengel of South Barrington, Ill. has handed her verbal commitment to the University of Arizona for the fall of 2021.

She will join Stella Copeland, Steffi Beisel and Lexi Duchsherer as a member of the Wildcats’ class of 2025.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Arizona! Thank you to all of my family, friends, and coaches for pushing me to the place I am at today! Another big thanks to the Arizona coaching staff and team for being so supportive and welcoming! I cannot wait to begin this new journey in Tucson! BEAR DOWN!!! ❤️?”

Schwengel, who owns the Junior National standard in the 100 free, most recently competed at Illinois Seniors where she finished fifth in both the 50 free and 100 free. Last summer, she recorded a best time in the 50m free at Illinois LCM Seniors before going on to win the 100 free at the LFSC Summer Regional Championships.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.53
  • 100 free – 50.60
  • 50m free – 27.15

Also competing for Barrington High School, Schwengel raced to 10th place in the 50 free at the Illinois State Championships as a junior. She won that event at the IHSA Sectional meet the week prior, and also earned gold in that race at the Sectional meet during her sophomore season.

When she arrives in Tucson at the start of the 2021-22 season, Schwengel will add her talents to a sprint training group that’ll be led by Alayna ConnorGrace Anderson, and Amalie Mortensen.
