NEW COMMIT: The University of Akron has received a new commitment for the upcoming 2019-20 season from Spain’s Andrea Galisteo Zapater.

A talented freestyler who gets faster as the distance gets longer, Galisteo Zapater swims for the Spanish Swimming Federation and earned bronze in the 800m free at the FINA World Cup in Doha last fall. She placed 11th in the 800m free and 10th in the 1500m free at the 2017 World Junior Championships before going on to finish eighth and sixth, respectively, in those events at the European Junior Championships last summer.

She told Swimming World:

“From my first conversation with coach Brian Peresie I knew that Akron was the best place for me to develop my swimming career.”

In LCM, her best times include:

  • 100m free – 59.42
  • 200m free – 2:03.70
  • 400m free – 4:16.74
  • 800m free – 8:40.31
  • 1500m free – 16:33.44

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 100 free – 52.52
  • 200 free – 1:49.25
  • 500 free – 4:45.50
  • 1000 free – 9:47.95
  • 1650 free – 16:18.53

Galisteo Zapatero will make an immediate impact when she suits up for the Zips as a member of the class of 2023 as her best times (converted to yards) already rank at the top of their lineup. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 500 free at the 2019 MAC Championships where Akron won their sixth-straight team title as well as placed in the top-3 of the mile.
