NEW COMMIT: The Woodlands, Texas native Cotton Fields has pledged his in-state verbal commitment to Southern Methodist University

He will join Sawyer Inglis and Angus Corbeau as a member of the Mustangs in the fall of 2021.

He told Swimming World:

“I am excited to announce that I have committed to swim at SMU in the class of 2025! I want to thank the special people in my life who have helped me make this decision, and supported me tirelessly. I truly can’t wait to continue my academic and athletic careers on the Hilltop, and I look forward to the next chapter as a mustang!! #ponyup”

A talented IMer and backstroker, Fields does his club swimming with The Woodlands Swim Team and is a Junior National qualifier. He most recently raced to fifth place in the 200 back at College Station Sectionals and earned 100% best times at Juniors West in December.

Last summer, Fields had an incredibly strong showing at Southern Zone Seniors. He achieved seven new lifetime bests and won the 200m IM and 400m IM while also collecting silver in the 100m back and 200m back.

His best times include:

  • 200 IM – 1:50.62
  • 400 IM – 3:55.26
  • 100 back – 50.09
  • 200 back – 1:46.33

Also competing for The Woodlands High School, Fields has competed at the Texas 6A State Championships the last two years. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed sixth in the 200 IM as a junior while taking 13th in that event during his sophomore season.

Fields will make an immediate impact for the Mustangs. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 back and 400 IM at the 2020 AAC Championships where Southern Methodist finished third overall in the team standings.
