NEW COMMIT: Southern Illinois University has added Nashville, Tenn. native and distance freestyle specialist Ian Marshall to the class of 2023.

Marshall swims year-round with Nashville Aquatic Club and capped off his long course season with five top-15 finishes at the American LCM meet where his highest finish was a fourth-place showing in the 800m free. He recorded three best times and was the runner-up in the mile at the Speedo Music City Invite last winter and competed in five events at the Southern Premier Invite in March.

Also competing for Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet, Marshall is a four-time Tennessee State Championship finalist. He placed fifth in the 500 free and tenth in the 200 free as a junior after finishing tenth and 15th, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim at Southern Illinois University! I know that SIU offers the ideal combination of challenging academics and athletics that I want in a university. The team made me feel welcome from the moment I met everyone – they are truly a family. I want to thank Coach Walker for the opportunity to swim for such a great team.  In addition, I want to thank all my Nashville Aquatic Club coaches (especially John Morse and Doug Wharam), all my NAC teammates and my family and friends for supporting and encouraging me through the years! I am ready to start ‘Going Up’! GO SALUKIS!!”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:43.22
  • 500 free – 4:37.54
  • 1000 free – 9:56.18
  • 1650 free – 16:16.16

When he suits up for the Salukis in the fall of 2019, Marshall will add his talents to a distance freestyle training group that includes Kevin Kluge and Michael Stern. His best mile time would’ve scored in the top-15 at the 2018 MAC Championships where Southern Illinois finished fourth overall in the team standings.
