CHARLESTON, South Carolina, June 17. SOUTH Carolina representative Wendell Gilliard has presented a plan to require two years of swimming to graduate from high school in the state, according to WIS TV.
The Charleston area has witnessed "several drowning deaths," and area lawmakers are attempting to find a way to counter the recent spate of drownings.
Gilliard's bill also "proposes schools offer free lessons if there is a public pool within 10 miles of the district."
According to the report, funding has not been included as part of the packaged bill.
