South Africa Names SC Worlds Team; Asks Athletes To Foot Travel Costs
Swimming South Africa (SSA) has announced an 18-member team for the upcoming 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships, which will be held in Windsor, Canada from December 6-11.
Graham Hill will lead the team as head coach with the assistance of Emile de Bruin, Wayne Riddin, and Peter Williams. Joining the staff as Team Manager will be Melanie Wagner, while Ziada Jardine will serve as the Team Physio.
On the men’s team:

- Neil Fair
- Clayton Jimmie
- Chad le Clos

On the women’s team:
- Kaylene Corbett
- Gabriella Grobler
- Tayla Lovemore
- Mariella Venter
While the news of being named to a national team can be exciting SSA followed the the news with a stipulation to being selected, noting that this would be a “subsidied tour” for all of the team members and that they would have to pay for over half of the trip’s costs. The trip is estimated to cost approximately 30,000 rand (about $2,000 USD), with the athletes being required to deposit 20,000 rand by the first of November.

It is the National Federation’s fiduciary responsibility — NOT thrvathlets’s — to pay for travel and expenses to international competition. Bet the RSA fed officials going to Windsor ain’t doing so on their own dime.
