SMU’s Carman Earns Swimmer of the Week

DALLAS, Texas. January, 25. CONFERENCE USA announced today that SMU swimmer Anja Carman was named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week. This is the first time this season Carman has been named to the list, but the sixth time a Mustang has claimed the honors.

Carman had two powerful performances last week, leading SMU to two consecutive victories. In the Mustangs' meet against North Texas, Carman took home two individual titles. She placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.19, the second-best time in the league thus far. However, the time does not beat her own Conference USA top time of 1:58.49, a time Carman recorded against Florida on Oct. 20, 2005.

The sophomore also tabbed the first-place finish in the 400-yard Individual Medley with a time of 4:23.32, another event that Carman holds the 2005-06 C-USA top finish (4:19.81, SMU Classic, Oct. 21). On Wednesday, the Mustangs downed North Texas, 145-85, and followed that performance with a 135.5-69.5 victory against league foe Rice on Friday.

Against the Owls, Carman captured two more first-place finishes. She touched the wall in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:55.10 and 56.32 in the 100-yard backstroke. Carman's 1,000-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke marks are both the third-best times this season for C-USA swimmers. The Mustangs' next team competition will be the Conference USA Championships, Feb. 22-25, in Houston.
