NEW COMMIT: The University of Cincinnati has received a new commitment for the fall of 2022 from Junior National qualifier Maksim Maskalenka of Las Vegas Nevada.

Ben Grottle will also suit up for the Bearcats this upcoming season.

He told Swimming World:

“Sin City —> Cin City! I’m really excited to announce my commitment to University of Cincinnati! After visiting the campus, I knew this was the place for me! I would like to thank all my coaches, family and friends for supporting me through all these years. I would also like to thank Coach Joey for making all this possible. I can’t wait to join the Bearcats next fall! #gobearcats”

A distance freestyler and IMer, Maskalenka trains with Sandpipers of Nevada and placed 24th in the 400 IM at Juniors West back in December. He also earned silver in the mile and bronze in the 500 free at Huntington Beach Sectionals. Last summer, he had five top-12 finishes at Western Zone Seniors.

He also competed in the 2021 Open Water Junior National 7.5k Championships.

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:29.37
  • 1000 free – 9:24.09
  • 1650 free – 15:35.82
  • 400 IM – 3:56.67

He’s currently a senior at Palo Verde High School.

With a long history of successfully producing top collegiate swimmers, Masskalenka is the first swimmer from Sandpipers to attend Cincinnati.
