Shippensburg Hires Grad Andrew Hale as Head Coach

Shippensburg hired 2023 graduate Andrew Hale as the head coach of its men’s and women’s swimming coach.

Hale replaces his former coach, Tim Verge, who retired at the end of the season after 27 years in charge.

Hale hasn’t strayed far from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. After graduating, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant for the women’s team at Millersville – under former Ship teammate Evan Anthony – then was a full-time assistant at Clarion in 2025-26.

“I am super excited to be the next head coach at Shippensburg University,” Hale said in a press release. “I am even more excited to be returning to the program where I developed as a swimmer, student, and individual for five years. It is an honor to be taking over for Tim Verge and to continue to strengthen and develop the program.”

Hale swam at Ship from 2018-23. He remains the school record holder in the 200 individual medley and 100 IM. He is in the top 10 in program history in eight events in all four strokes – 100/200 breast, 100 back, 400 IM, 100 free and 100 fly. He helped the Raiders finish second at the PSAC men’s championship in 2021.

Hale was a 19-tme place-winner at PSACs, with six top-three finishes and on six soring relays. He received his bachelor’s degree in history with social studies teaching certification and minors in coaching and exercise science in 2023, then a master’s degree in sport management with a concentration in athletic coaching from Millersville in 2025.
