Seneca Valley Charges to First PIAA Class AAA Title; Florida Recruit Daniel Gordon Snares Sprint Sweep

Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium was home to some history-making efforts recently as the Seneca Valley Senior High boys captured their first-ever state title at the PIAA Class AAA Championships. In a close meet, the Harmony, Pennsylvania-based school managed to eke out a 14-point victory over defending champions La Salle High.

Cornell commit Daniel Simoes led the Raiders charge with his maiden state victory in the 200 individual medley. The senior took the event with a 1:48.87, his first time cracking the 1:50 barrier. Simoes had another individual podium finish later in the meet when he grabbed third in the 100 freestyle in 45.18, also in personal-best fashion. Simoes provided a pivotal 44.26 anchor split in the 400 free relay to overtake North Penn and lead his team to victory in the event.

Another swimmer in top form was Spring Grove senior Daniel Gordon. The Florida commit took the sprint double, soaring to wins in the 50 (20.12) and 100 (44.11) free. Meanwhile, Boston University-signee Patrick Gilhool was another double individual winner, capturing the 100 butterfly (47.69) and 100 backstroke (47.57). The Liberty senior has come into his own over the past 12 months. At last year’s meet, he was only 50.59 and 51.46, respectively. With his times last week, he is not far off the Terrier team records (46.43 and 47.16) in both events. He added another gold medal leading off the winning Liberty 200 free relay (1:23.18) in 20.73, also a personal best.

Other athletes who scored individual wins at the meet were Georgia Tech commit Ben Gerhard in the 200 free (1:38.88), Abington senior Conor Gesing in the one-meter diving (559.40), Owen J. Roberts junior Logan Richards in the 500 free (4:26.93), and Conestoga sophomore Jake Wang in the 100 breast (54.95).
