Second Annual ASA U. National Championships Off to Exciting Start

COLUMBUS, OH. April 22. THE Second Annual ASA U. National Championships is off to an exciting start with Virginia Club Swimming and Colorado Swimming and Diving tied for first place on the men's side (340 points) and the same two clubs jostling for first on the women's side after the first day of the two-day competition.

UVA and CU traded the women's lead throughout the finals, with Colorado pulling ahead in the last events (537-468). Colorado opened and closed the first day of competition by sweeping the relays for men and women. The men's competition is close all the way down the board, with U.Tennessee, host Ohio State, Georgia Tech, and Northeastern rounding out the field. On the women's side, CU-Boulder and UVA have pulled out ahead of the pack.

Oliver Spees of Colorado swept his events, garnering ASA U. National Championship Titles in the 25 Back (11.30), 50 Free (21.41), and 100 Back (52.87). Katie McWilliams of UVA also won three events: the 500 Free (5:14.53), 200 IM (2:16.50), and 100 Fly (1:02.87). Day two of competition on Sunday will feature the 100, 200, and 1650 freestyle and the remaining strokes to be contested in 25's, 50's, and 100's.

The American Swimming Association University League is an association of student-run swim clubs from colleges and universities across the United States that enjoy the sport of swimming in a friendly, competitive environment. ASA U. was founded in response to the elimination of so many collegiate varsity swimming teams across the country.
