SEC Day 2 Prelims: Caeleb Dressel, Sydney Pickrem Take Tops Seeds in 200 IM

Caeleb Dressel was off to another quick start during Thursday’s SEC Championship preliminaries.

The Florida senior took the top seed in the 200 IM in 1:40.74, a pool record at Texas A&M. Teammate Mark Szaranek took the third seed (1:42.48) and Jan Switkowski took the fifth seed (1:43.46).

Auburn freshman Hugo Gonzalez took the second seed (1:41.69). Texas A&M’s Brock Bonetti tied Szaranek at 1:42.48. Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz took the sixth seed (1:43.83) at 1:43.83), followed by Tom Peribonio (1:44.10) and Kentucky’s Glen Brown (1:44.16).

In the men’s 500 free, South Carolina’s Akram Mahmoud took the top seed (4:14.12) just ahead of teammate Fynn Minuth (4:14.55). Florida’s Andrew Brady took the third seed (4:14.98), followed by teammate Ben Lawless (4:16.06), Georgia’s Jay Litherland (4:16.64), Florida’s Khader Baglah (4:17.07), Georgia’s Walker Higgins (4:17.20) and Florida’s Blake Manganiello (4:17.38).

In the 50 free, Tennessee’s Kyle Decoursey took the top seed (191.3), followed by Alabama’s Robert Howard (19.23) and Zane Waddell (19.47). Texas A&M’s Adam Koster took the fourth spot (19.48), followed by Auburn’s Peter Holoda (19.49) and Zach Apple (19.55). Missouri’s Luke Mankus took the seventh spot (19.64) and Florida’s Enzo Martinez-Scarpe was eighth (19.73).

In the women’s meet, Texas A&M’s Sydney Pickrem took the top seed in the 200 IM (1:53.72), leading three Aggies in the final. Lisa Bratton took the sixth seed (1:56.03), McKenna DeBever was seventh (1:56.13). Bethany Galat just missed the final by one hundredth of a second to take the ninth seed at 1:56.16.

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt took the second seed (1:54.92), followed by Tennessee’s Meghan Small (1:55.15), South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale (1:55.20) and Georgia’s Megan Kingsley (1:55.88). Georgia’s Meaghan Raab took the eighth spot (1:56.15).

Kentucky’s Geena Freriks took the top seed in the 500 free (4:41.12), finishing ahead of Texas A&M’s Claire Rasmus (4:41.31) and Georgia’s Courtney Harnish (4:41.61).

Florida’s Taylor Ault was fourth (4:42.64), followed by Georgia’s Meryn McCann (4:42.85), Arkansas freshman Peyton Palsha (4:43.05), A&M’s Katie Portz (4:43.09) and Georgia’s Stephanie Peters (4:43.29).

In the 50 free, Tennessee sophomore Erika Brown took the top seed at 21.60, followed by Auburn’s Aly Tetzloff (21.83) and Ashton Ellzey (22.02). Alabama’s Bailey Scott took the fourth seed (22.07), followed by Tennessee’s Madeline Banic (22.08), Georgia’s Gabrielle Fa’amausili (22.18), Georgia’s Veronica Burchill (22.22) and Tennessee’s Bailey Grinter (22.28).
