SEC Championships, Night 4: Mona McSharry Three-Peats in 100 Breast; Splits 55.94 on Relay

In four years of college, Mona McSharry has never been worse than second in the 100 breaststroke at the SEC Championships. She was much more than even that on Friday.

The Tennessee swimmer and Irish Olympian made it a 3-peat in the 100 breast, going 57.00 to lower her morning pool and meet record. She routed the field by 1.49 seconds.

And then McSharry went almost one better in the medley relay, helping the Volunteers win the 400 medley relay with a meet record of 3:24.92, with a stellar split of 55.94 seconds on breaststroke.

All the action from the penultimate night at Auburn.

Men’s 100 breaststroke

Aleksas Savickas and company threw down a wicked fast 100 breast that lead to split silver medals and the second straight year of Florida 1-2.

Savickas won in 51.01, bettering his pool record from the morning. He was .25 up on the pair tied for second, the position Savickas was in last year. When he did that, teammate Dillon Hillis won. This time it’s Savickas on top with Julian Smith tied for second in 51.26 with Texas A&M’s Alex Sanchez. Both were also under Hillis’ 2020 pool mark from the beginning of the day. Only Savickas had an A cut.

Auburn’s Henry Bethel was fourth. Mitch Mason of LSU was fifth.

Men’s 400 medley relay

There’s no stopping Florida quite yet. The Gators went 3:00.49 to set the pool record, though it is 1.01 seconds slower than the meet record they set last year and two seconds shy of the NCAA record that same foursome set last year.

Two are holdovers from last year, Josh Liendo and Macguire McDuff. The front half is changed, with 100 back champ Jonny Marshall and 100 breast winner Aleksas Savickas.

Tennessee finished second in 3:01.27. They have an A cut, as does Auburn in third in 3:03.96. Georgia and Texas A&M tied for fourth, both in an A cut of 3:04.72.

Marshall was only the fourth-fastest in the backstroke leg in 45.13. Ruard Van Renen went 44.95 to lead the way for Georgia. Savickas’ 51.17 was the quickest breaststroke leg, and Liendo led the way with a blistering 42.77 in fly. Gui Caribe brought it home quickest in 40.71.
