Schoeman Out of South African National Championships

DURBAN, South Africa, April 15. ACCORDING to a report in the Mail & Guardian, Roland Schoeman will not compete at next week’s South African Championships, scheduled for Durban. Schoeman has been battling illness, which forced him to withdraw from the World Short Course Championships. The report indicated that Schoeman, the reigning long-course world titlist in the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly, has not recovered enough to compete.

Still, the meet will feature the likes of Ryk Neethling and Suzaan van Biljon, along with Gerhard Zandberg. Neethling left the World Short Course Champs with gold medals in the 100 and 200 freestyles and the 100 individual medley. Van Biljon was the silver medalist in the 100 breast. The meet is scheduled for April 18-23.
