Santoro earns weekly MVC swimming honors

ST. LOUIS, Illinois. December, 9. AFTER his top finishes in the U.S. Open, Southern Illinois University swimmer Antonio Santoro was named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

The announcement marks the second time this season that Santoro has earned the honor. He was also named MVC Swimmer of the Week for the week ending Nov. 9.

Santoro, a sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, competed in three events at the U.S. Open, which was held at Auburn University's James E. Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala.

On Thursday he finished eighth in the B Final (16th overall) in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:06.80. He also had his top preliminary finish in the 400 free with a time of 4:04.27.

Santoro also finished eighth in the B Final (16th overall) of the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:55.73. He rounded out his effort Saturday as he finished eighth in the C Final (24th overall) of the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:08.64.

Santoro was the only SIU swimmer competing at the U.S. Open to qualify for three events.

The SIU swimmeing & diving teams return to action Jan. 21, 2006 as the Salukis travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on MVC rival Missouri State in a dual meet.
