San Diego State Earns First Verbal for 2021-22 Season from Sprinter Meredith Smithbaker
NEW COMMIT: Fort Collins, Colo. sprinter Meredith Smithbaker has given San Diego State University their first verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond.
Smithbaker, who owns three Summer Juniors standards, does her club swimming with Team Vortex and most recently placed ninth in the 50m free at Junior Nationals this past summer after earning a best time at Colorado LCM Seniors. Last winter, she finished 20th in the 50m free at Winter Nationals before going on to earn bronze in the 50/100 free at Phoenix Sectionals.

A current junior at Rocky Mountain High School, Smithbaker is already a four-time finalist at the Colorado 5A State Championships. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American was the runner-up in the 50 free and took ninth in the 100 breast as a sophomore while taking fourth and third, respectively, in those events during her freshman season.
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 23.21
- 100 free – 50.63
- 200 free – 1:51.77
- 100 breast – 1:03.79
- 200 IM – 2:07.91
Smithbaker will make an immediate impact both individually and on relays when she suits up for the Aztecs as a member of the class of 2025. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 100 free as well as the C-final of the 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 free at the 2019 Mountain West Conference Championships where San Diego State handily won the team title.
