Sam Magnan, 1500 Free Junior National Champion, Chooses Virginia For College

FREEDOM, Pennsylvania, September 30. JUNIOR national champion Sam Magnan is headed to the University of Virginia next fall, taking his distance freestyle talents to Charlottesville and Augie Busch’s program.

“I couldn’t be more excited about my decision with Virginia,” he said. “I loved the team and the coaching staff and knew it was the place for me!”

Magnan won the 1500 free at this summer’s junior nationals with a 15:28.58 and was fourth in the 400 free with a 3:55.55 and fourth in the 800 free with an 8:06.04. He also swam a 200 free time trial and recorded a lifetime best 1:54.31. His efforts in the long course pool helped Magnan land a spot on the USA Swimming national junior team.

Magnan will look to bring his short course yards times up to the level of his fast long course swims from this summer. Representing Freedom High School, he was second at last March’s Pennsylvania AAA high school state championships in the 500 free with a 4:25.05 and won the B final of the 200 free with a 1:40.91. He also can claim a 15:14.58 lifetime best in the 1650 freestyle from last December’s junior nationals.
