Rylee Erisman Stalking Several NAG Records at Winter Junior Champs
A week after Luka Mijatovic set National Age Group records in the 400-meter freestyle and 800 freestyle while racing at the U.S. Open, attention will shift to another of the United States’ rising stars. The Speedo Winter Junior Championships are scheduled for Dec. 10-13, with the East edition at the Indiana University Natatorium (Indianapolis) and the West version at the University of Texas’ Jamail Swim Center (Austin).
In Indy, world junior champion Rylee Erisman will be the biggest name on deck, and several NAG records are within the 16-year-old’s reach. Having recently reclassified to the Class of 2026 and committed to Cal-Berkeley for her collegiate career, Erisman is entered in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Whether she retains each of those entries remains to be seen.
Erisman heads to Juniors with the potential of setting NAG records for the 15-16 classification in three events. She is already the record-holder in the 100 freestyle, thanks to a 46.69 performance from 2024. Given the strides she has made over the pas year, Erisman (Laker Swim) likely has a faster mark in her arsenal. Meanwhile, she will also chase NAG standards in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle.
The NAG record in the 50 freestyle stands at 21.50, a time produced by Claire Curzan in 2021. Erisman is the top seed at Juniors in the sprint event, with a mark of 21.61. Needing to drop just a tenth, Erisman stands a strong chance of adding that age-group record to her collection. She’ll also take aim at the NAG record in the 200 freestyle, although the eight-lap discipline is probably the most difficult task.
The record in the 15-16 age group for the 200 freestyle belongs to the legendary Katie Ledecky, who registered an effort of 1:42.03 during the 2013 season. Erisman is seeded first in the 200 free at 1:43.51, and while that entry time is more than a second off Ledecky’s record, Erisman could give the standard a push.
