Men’s 200 Back

A trio of talented backstrokers led the field in the men’s 200 back throughout the entirety of the race. Cal teammates Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley, along with Japan’s Ryosuke Irie, kept close with one another throughout the first 150 meters of the race, but Murphy pulled away to claim the win and defend his title from Austin with a time of 1:55.46. That time improves upon Murphy’s world leading time of 1:56.11 from the Austin stop.

Pebley finished close behind Murphy with a time of 1:55.85, also improving upon his second place ranking of 1:56.40 in the 2018 world rankings.

Irie, who returned tonight as the top qualifier, took third overall with a 1:56.77. His time improves upon his previous 2018 best of 1:57.40 from the Geneva International meet and moved him to fourth overall in the world rankings.

Josiah Binnema of the UBC Thunderbirds grabbed fourth overall with a 2:00.59, followed by teammate Markus Thormeyer’s time of 2:00.65.

SwimAtlanta’s Bradley Dunham (2:02.51), Dynamo Swim Club’s Ian Grum (2:02.78), and Plymouth’s Andrew Abruzzo (2:03.45) took sixth through eighth respectively.

He actually went 1:55.46. Why is it so hard to get the headline right?
