Russia Wins Team Final, Suffers Upset in Solo at FINA Junior Synchro World Champs

FOSHAN, China, October 11. WHILE Russia may have completely dominated all of the team and duet events at the FINA Junior Synchronized Swimming World Championships throughout the week, the county could not stave off a determined hometown hero in the solo routines. In the end, Russia claimed gold in the team free routine final, while Huang Xuechen rode the momentum of a friendly crowd to the solo title on Wednesday.

In the team event, the Russian squad of Aleksandra Patskevich, Aleksandra ElChinova, Viktoria Anufrieva, Svetlana Ponkratova, Daria Korobova, Tatiana Zavalishina, Veronika Fedulova and Anna Udovik accumulated 85.780 combined points to win the overall gold. The Russians added the 38.130 points gained during figures competition on Monday to its 47.65 points from the night’s free routine to run away with the title.

China’s team of He Dandan, Han Ying, Ge Xiaowei, Xuechen, Yuan Wenjing, Xu Yue, Bao Xiaoxiao and Sun Wenyan parlayed a strong effort in figures (37.333 points) into silver with an 84.183 tally. China secured the second-place finish with a 46.85 during its free routine during the evening’s finals.

Meanwhile, Japan’s contingent of Yukiko Inui, Mai Nakamura, Chiaki Kagaya, Yuma Kawai, Miho Arai, Yumi Adachi, Yui Ueminami and Natsuki Ohhara rounded out the top three with a bronze-medal tally of 83.252. The Japanese combined 36.752 points from figures with a 46.50-point performance from their final free routine effort.

In what proved to be the biggest upset of the entire meet, Xuechen spoiled Russia’s gold-medal sweep with a triumph in the solo competition. Xuechen built upon on second-place figures total of 37.591 with a stellar free routine score of 46.85 to claim the title with 84.441 points. Russia’s ElChinova finished in the silver spot just behind with an 84.038 tally based on 36.988 figures points and 47.05 points from her free routine. Japan’s Inui claimed the final medal with 83.624 points (37.524 figures + 46.10 free routine.)
