Rowdy Gaines will be the host of Golden Goggles Monday night in New York City, Swimming World has learned. Gaines will fill in for Dan Hicks, who was named host last week after NBC Olympic host Bob Costas pulled out due to other commitments.

Gaines, the gold medalist in the men’s 100 free at the 1984 Olympic Games, has been the lead swimming analyst for NBC for the past six Olympic Games, and he also provides commentary for the World Championships, U.S. Nationals and Arena Pro Swim Series meets for NBC Universal channels and the NCAA championships for ESPN. He is also heavily involved in the USA Swimming Foundation.

USA Swimming has not publicized the reasoning for either switch in hosts.

Watched him while I was swimming in high school in the 80s. Always one of my favorites. Met him at Pan Pacs in Irvine several years ago……just marched up to the broadcasting trailer and walked in. He was very gracious. I even asked if he would talk to my swim coach from NJ…..he did….great day all around.
