Rockville-Montgomery Claims Tom Dolan Invitational (TDI) Title

FAIRFAX, VA, December 14. In a hotly contested team championship battle that pitted perennial east coast swimming powers, host Curl-Burke Swim Club (CUBU), defending champion Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club (RMSC) and visiting NOVA of Virginia Aquatics (NOVA), RMSC came away with combined team, men’s, and women’s titles in the annual Tom Dolan Invitational this past weekend, as reported by Kent Williams.

The TDI has become one of the fastest holiday age-group meets on the east coast, if not in the nation.

The relays demonstrated the top to bottom health of these programs. RMSC swam National Age Group Top16 times in sixteen of twenty-two 14 & under relay events and qualified for ConocoPhillips National Championship in both the Men’s and Women’s Open 400 Medley Relays. CUBU ended with ten 14 & under relay NAG times and three Senior National qualifying standards. NOVA finished with 11 NAG relay times and two Senior National qualifying relays.

TDI featured some incredibly fast and extremely deep swimming from all ages. In the 10 & under, 11-12 and 13-14 categories, it took a NAG AAA time to score in the top sixteen in many events, showing the future looks bright for east coast swimming.

On the 15 & over senior side of the meet, which has often been dominated by postgraduate Olympians and Olympic hopefuls, this year’s TDI saw a youth movement with no drop in the quality of swimming. Top swims included the following World Championship Trial qualifying swims:

Liz Kemp, 16 (CUBU) 23.08 50 FR, 49.95 100 FR, 1:47.75 200 FR;
Colleen Haase, 15 (RMSC) 1:03.29 100 BR, 2:15.84 200 BR;
Kristen Beales, 16 (CUBU) 2:16.67 200 BR, 4:19.66 400 IM;
Amilee Smith, 16 (RMSC) 2:17.00 200 BR;
Kelly Nelson, 17 (SUBURBAN) 2:00.43 200 FL, 4:17.53 400 IM;
Elizabeth Shaw, 17 (NOVA) 2:01.38 200 FL, 4:18.28 400 IM
Drew Finelli, 16 (CUBU) 9:20.90 1000 FR, 15:32.36 1650 FR;
Josh Hafkin, 16 (RMSC) 49.29 100 BK, 1:48.32 200 BK
Mike Hopkins, 17 (DST) 1:48.08 200 BK;
Kate Ziegler, 16 (FISH), 1:46.85 200 free, 4:38.62 500 free, 9:32.01 1000 free, 15.47.20 1650 free.

SwimInfo previously reported on Ziegler’s 500/1650 double, but her 200/1000 is similarly impressive and added to her assault on the Potomac Valley record book.
