Rivard Sets Paralympic Record at Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships

MONTREAL, February 18. PARALYMPIC swimmer Joelle Rivard continued a successful comeback from retirement Friday by breaking her second world record in two days at the 2006 Speedo Eastern Canadian Swimming Championships. Rivard, who returned to competition last year after retiring in 1996, lowered the world mark in the 100-meter backstroke in the S4 disability category on Friday after beating the 50 backstroke world record on Thursday.

“I never expected to break the backstroke records,” said Rivard, 28. “My main focus this year has been the butterfly. It’s a great gift. I swam really well but I didn’t think I swam that fast.”

In the women’s open class, Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield was a double winner by placing first in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle. Victoria Poon took the 50 freestyle and Karah Stanworth-Belleville won the 100 backstroke. In men’s open competition, winners were Colin Russell in the 50 freestyle, Jonathan Aubry in the 200 IM, Francesco Zuccaro in the 400 freestyle and Charles Francis in the 100 backstroke.
