NEW COMMIT: Cupertino, Calif. native Virginie Qian as announced her verbal commitment to Rice University and will join the Owls next fall.

Qian swims year-round with Santa Clara Swim Club and owns the Winter Juniors cut in the 200 IM. She concluded her long course season with a seventh and eighth place finish in the 400 IM and 200 IM, respectively, at Santa Clara Futures. She recorded a lifetime best at Santa Clara TYR Pro Swim Series and also competed at Juniors West last winter.

Representing Monta Vista High School, Qian has competed at the CIF State Championships and placed 12th in the 200 IM as a junior. At CIF-Centrals a week prior, she finished fourth in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 IM.

She told Swimming World:

“The combination of an incredibly welcoming staff and swim team, unparalleled educational structure, and cordial atmosphere made me believe that Rice University is the perfect fit for me! I am so excited to be able to further my academic and athletic pursuits at this school! GO OWLS!!”

Her best times include:

  • 200 IM – 2:03.06
  • 100 breast – 1:04.13
  • 200 breast – 2:20.22
  • 500 free – 5:00.44
  • 1650 free – 17:01.81

Qian’s versatility will add valuable depth to the Owls’ lineup when she arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season; her best 200 IM and 100 breast would’ve scored in the B-final at the 2018 C-USA Championships. Under head coach Seth Huston, Rice finished second in the team standings at last season’s conference meet.
